CARSA site prep begun

March 7, 2013 - The Ring

Site preparation for the Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities began the week of Feb. 25 at the intersection of Gabriola Road and McKenzie Avenue. In preparation for construction, parking lot 3 off Gabriola Road was permanently closed. The Alumni Chip Trail through the construction zone will also be closed for the duration of the project to ensure public safety. Access to playing fields 1, 2 and 3 has also changed: enter the fields from behind the Continuing Studies Building. Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to consult directional information posted at the site, and use alternate routes. Alternative nearby parking areas are lots 2, 4 and 7. Beaucamp Coach of the Year (again)

Vikes men’s basketball team’s head coach Craig Beaucamp has been named Canada West Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his 10-year career. This is Beaucamp’s second-straight nod as the conference’s top coach. Beaucamp, a previous Canada West Coach of the Year recipient in 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2011/12, led the Vikes to a 16-6 regular season record in 2012-13.

Ken and Kathy Shields honoured

February 6, 2013 - The Ring

Ken and Kathy Shields, one of the most storied and successful coaching duos in CIS history, have been included in the BC Sports Hall of Fame’s 2013 Class of Inductees. As head coaches of the ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø Vikes men’s and women’s basketball teams, the husband and wife were at the helm of two of the most successful varsity programs in the country, earning a combined fifteen national titles. Integral to the development of the UVic men’s basketball dynasty of the 1980s, Ken Shields coached the team to an incredible seven straight CIAU/CIS Championships and earned four CIAU/CIS Coach of the Year awards. As head coach of the Vikes women’s basketball team for over 20 years Kathy Shields won eight CIAU/CIS national titles and was a two-time CIAU/CIS Coach of the Year. Ken and Kathy Shields will be formally inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame at the 45th Annual Banquet of Champions on Sept. 19, 2013.

Rowing across the Atlantic—with UVic’s help

January 9, 2013 - The Ring

Later this month, when four men push off from Africa’s westernmost point to row across the Atlantic, they’ll give both the mundane routine and the complexity of their daily schedules over to a computer program developed at UVic. The Ocean Adventure Rowing (OAR) Northwest team, including Olympic gold medalist and UVic and Vikes alumnus Adam Kreek, will share a modified 29-foot rowboat for the Africa to the Americas 2012 trip, embarking from Dakar, Senegal for Miami, Florida—a 6,700-kilometre trip across the Atlantic expected to take 60–100 days.
