Annual BFA Visual Arts exhibit

The Department of Visual Arts will be overflowing with work by more than 30 student artists when the annual Bachelor of Fine Arts graduating exhibit debuts this month. This year鈥檚 exhibit鈥攚hich opens at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, and runs through to April 27鈥攊s aptly titled Work and features a wide variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, installation and extended media works. 鈥淚t is a true celebration of this moment in contemporary art and shows great promise for the future of visual art,鈥 says faculty curator Sandra Meigs. But the art doesn鈥檛 stop there鈥攖he annual MFA graduating exhibition runs May 4 to 11 in the Visual Arts Building.

McDougall CD nominated for Juno

March 7, 2013 - The Ring

School of Music Professor Emeritus Ian McDougall鈥檚 Fine Arts benefit CD, The Very Thought of You, has been nominated for a 2013 Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year. It was produced by McDougall鈥檚 wife, Barbara, and features a selection of jazz standards with strings. The album鈥檚 nomination came as a surprise to them both. 鈥淏arb and I are overjoyed about the news,鈥 says McDougall, who recently presented the Faculty of Fine Arts with a cheque for $16,000 raised through CD sales鈥攖he first significant payment to his Ten Mile Fine Arts Student Assistance Fund. The Juno winners are announced on April 21, and the CD is available on campus at the Bookstore, Arts Place Cafe, the School of Music, Phoenix Theatre and the Fine Arts office.

Robert Bateman on art and environment

On Jan. 27, renowned wildlife artist Robert Bateman delivered a public lecture on the relationship between his art practice and his passion for environmentalism at UVic鈥檚 Legacy Gallery. His talk was presented in association with the exhibition Honoris Causa, featuring work by recipients of honorary degrees from UVic.

Humans have a complex relationship with animals. Although animals ourselves, we humans, especially in Western cultures, often see ourselves as exceptional or 鈥渁bove鈥 other species with which we share the planet. Yet those other animals are integral to virtually all aspects of our existence.

Legacy Gallery exhibit offers art, with honours

When it comes to showcasing the University Art Collections, the pieces on permanent display across campus are really only the tip of the artistic iceberg. There鈥檚 the art that rotates through the various exhibits at both downtown鈥檚 Legacy Gallery and the McPherson Library鈥檚 Maltwood Prints and Drawings Gallery, for instance, but there is also the work done by the acclaimed artists who hold honourary degrees from the university. And while many of these are household names鈥擩ack Shadbolt, E.J. Hughes, Robert Bateman, Mary Pratt鈥攖heir work isn鈥檛 regularly seen around UVic.

Coast Salish traditions shared

鈥淟earning Coast Salish traditional knitting from Elder May Sam, and knitters Joni and Adam Olsen was a wonderful experience,鈥 says Rosa McBee, anthropology student. May Sam, Joni Olsen and Adam Olse鈥攁ll knitters from the Tsartlip First Nation鈥攖aught students the basic art form of traditional Coast Salish knitting each week as part of the third-year Anthropology of Art course last term.
