Urban design to support the disoriented

You may have heard of care facilities designed specifically for people with dementia; they have features such as circular walkways, colour-coded areas that help people recognize where they are, or simple signs hung at eye level. But what if we started taking the needs of people with dementia into consideration when we designed a new park or a city street? These were questions Maria Przydatek explored as part of her masters thesis on dementia-friendly urban planning.

Enhanced safety and quality of life are goals of pan-Canadian study on older drivers Tests currently used by doctors to assess a senior鈥檚 ability to keep driving need to be improved, a long-term study of older drivers is revealing. 鈥淭he currently available guidelines for physicians are not doing a very good job of identifying people at risk,鈥 says Dr. Holly Tuokko, a psychologist with UVic鈥檚 Centre on Aging. 鈥淲e need a better set of tools.鈥

UVic retirees present Masterminds 2014

April 28, 2014 - The Ring

Retirement has rarely stopped UVic professors from sharing their rich intellectual knowledge and experiences with communities on or off campus. This April, four UVic retirees will offer insight on topics ranging from Islam to the use of math to control infectious diseases as part of the annual Masterminds free public lecture series. Presented by the UVic Retirees Association and the Centre on Aging鈥攚ith support from the university鈥攖he series takes place at 7 p.m. in UVic鈥檚 Harry Hickman Building, room 105.

Celebration of exceptional staff

The celebration of this year's President鈥檚 Distinguished Service Award recipients, hosted by President Jamie Cassels, took place on Feb. 20 at the University Club. Reeta Tremblay, UVic鈥檚 vice-president academic and provost, and Kane Kilbey, associate vice-president human resources, made presentations before the announcement of this year鈥檚 recipients.

On April 10, Dr. Ed Ishiguro will discuss 鈥淧robiotics for Better Health: Time to Switch Gears;鈥 on April 17, Dr. Howie Wenger will speak on 鈥淕earing Up For High Performance: The Athlete鈥檚 Quest;鈥 on April 24, Dr. Reg Mitchell will talk about 鈥淯sing Chemistry to Enhance Our Bodies: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly;鈥 and on May 1, Juliana Saxton will speak on 鈥淎n Unusual Job for a Lady: The Intriguing Role of an Orator.鈥 All lectures are at 7 p.m. in the Hickman Building, room 105.
