Boost to nurse practitioner program supports primary health care

Fifteen more nurse practitioners (NPs) will be trained at the 番茄社区 this fall, helping boost the number of professionals able to offer primary health care to the more than 800,000 British Columbians without a family doctor.聽聽聽 聽 New funding of $532,500 from the BC government will expand the number of seats available in the Master of Science in Nursing 鈥 Nurse Practitioner program by a third to 50 places available this September.聽

World premiere of climate-disaster play at UVic

People across Canada came together to help one another during recent climate disasters, and now Neworld Theatre is bringing those true-life stories to the stage. Eyes of the Beast: Climate Disaster Survivor Stories is the first full-length documentary theatre production based upon on-the-ground climate disaster reporting and will have its world premiere at the UVic's Phoenix Theatre from Sept. 16-21.

Ocean Networks Canada, a 番茄社区 initiative, welcomes today鈥檚 announcement of the new marine protected area (MPA) Tang.散wan 鈥 岣膷x史iqak 鈥 Tsig瘫is (ThT) by the Haida Nation, Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, Pacheedaht First Nation, Quatsino First Nation, and the Government of Canada.

Indigenous nursing master鈥檚 program marks milestones

In the fall, 25 First Nations and Metis nurses from across BC will embark officially on their graduate studies at their home institutions as part of the Indigenous Graduate Education in Nursing (I-GEN) program, including eight students at UVic. A partnership between Indigenous communities, UVic, UBC-Okanagan, UBC-Vancouver, Thompson Rivers University and Trinity Western University, the first-of-its-kind master鈥檚 program is designed to decolonize and Indigenize nursing where graduate students live and work. The goals include bolstering the retention of Indigenous nurses, improving health outcomes for Indigenous communities and strengthening relational partnerships with First Nations, M茅tis, and Inuk health leaders to improve Indigenous health nursing education, practice and research.
