UVic Chair in Transgender Studies nationally recognized for exceptional contributions

NEȾOLṈEW̱: One mind, one people and 42 Indigenous languages

A new language revitalization project led by UVic will bring new life and strength to Indigenous languages in Canada. NEȾOLṈEW̱, which translates as 'one mind, one people' in SENĆOŦEN, is a six-year project supported by a $2.5M SSHRC Partnership Grant that will create a learning and research network with nine Indigenous-led partner organizations across the country.

Alcohol warning labels about cancer risk a Canadian first

November 22, 2017 - Media release

Starting today, warning labels cautioning consumers about the link between alcohol use and an increased risk of breast and colon cancer will be applied to all bottles and cans sold at the Whitehorse liquor store. This specific labelling, part of the study led by UVic’s Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research, is a first for Canada.

Holocaust survivors remember forgotten hero’s wartime efforts

A UVic historian's research on the efforts of Switzerland’s forgotten Schindler—a diplomat named Carl Lutz—will be presented Nov. 27 in Switzerland at the world’s premier gathering for Holocaust remembrance and education. Charlotte Schallié's findings include 36 harrowing stories of survival.

Clean energy projects at UVic get a $2.4M boost

November 16, 2017 - Media release

$2.4 million in new clean energy funding from the Government of Canada ($1.4M), and from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation in conjunction with Seaspan ($1M), was announced today, boosting UVic researchers’ ability to accelerate the kinds of solutions-focused, clean energy projects that are making a difference at a local, national and international level.
