Sociologist wins national prize for reducing inequity and stigma

From advocating for the recognition of Indigenous and non-Indigenous midwives, to working with street-involved youth, to empowering sex workers to become their own health advocates, sociologist Cecilia Benoit has made vital contributions to the advancement of class, race and gender equality in Canada. CISUR scientist and sociology professor emerita at UVic has been awarded the 2020 Killam Prize in Social Sciences.

Alcohol warning labels reduce sales, change minds

Colourful, highly visible warning labels applied to bottles and cans of alcohol in Yukon鈥檚 largest liquor store prompted many people in Canada鈥檚 highest-alcohol-consuming region to cut back on their drinking. This was one of the major findings from the Northern Territories Alcohol Labels Study鈥攁 real-world study of alcohol warning labels led by CISUR in 2017鈥攑ublished this month in a special section of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

Entrepreneurship and Indigenous education professors win prestigious teaching awards

A professor of entrepreneurship who has helped boost the number of Indigenous-owned businesses across BC and a professor of Indigenous education who has made significant advancements in the indigenization of curriculum for BC students are the 13th and 14th 番茄社区 scholars recognized with Canada鈥檚 most prestigious award for excellence in leadership and teaching.
