Karyn McCallum
Karyn has had a rich and diverse career in Performance Design, spanning many decades covering the disciplines of set, costume, and projection design, as well as having had a career in Scenic Art. She has also contributed to the field as an educator, having previously taught at TMU, Brock University, and most recently at Dalhousie University, where she was faculty in design at The Fountain School of Performing Arts.
As a design philosophy, Karyn integrates the design elements to elevate one another while they mutually support the narrative and directorial concept, resulting in each production having a unique aesthetic. Her personal "stamp as an artist" can be seen within that uniqueness and through the cohesiveness of the production.
Karyn is a Phoenix alumnus having completed her MFA in mid- career under Mary Kerr, the focus of her degree being integrating projection design in live performance after having completed a fine arts degree in digital media. Karyn began her career studying design at TMU then designing and apprenticing as a scenic artist in England, returning to Canada after 10 years. She has designed across Canada including: Tarragon Theatre, Canadian Stage, National Arts centre, Blythe Festival amongst many others, most recently at Shaw Festival- current production: Witness for the Prosecution directed by fellow alumni Alistair Newton. Karyn is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada ADC local 659.website: https://www.karyn-mccallum-design.com/
